Pointstreak, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has announced that Quebec Capitales RHP Arik Sikula has been named the league’s Rawlings Pitcher of the Month for the month of July.
Sikula made five starts in July, winning all of them. He struck out 23 hitters over 34.2 innings. For his efforts in his first two starts of the month, Sikula was named Can-Am League Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 9.
He first took the mound on July 3 to face the Ottawa Champions at home, and allowed two earned runs over 7.2 innings. Sikula struck out four as Quebec won 9-3. He returned to the hill on July 8 to take on the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, and hurled 7.1 shutout frames. Sikula struck out six in a 10-1 victory.
His next two starts came against the Rockland Boulders. On July 13 in Rockland, he tossed six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk, and striking out three. Quebec took a narrow 5-4 win. Sikula beat the Boulders again on July 19 at home, allowing an unearned run over 6.1 innings. He scattered four hits and struck out five in the game, a 4-1 Quebec triumph. Sikula’s final outing of the month occurred on July 27 at the Aigles. He threw 7.1 shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out five. Quebec won the game 3-2.
On the season, Sikula is now 8-3 with a 3.17 ERA. In 15 games, 12 of them in a starting role, he has worked 79.1 innings and struck out 72.
The former Marshall University player began his professional career in 2011 with the Bluefield (W. Va.) Blue Jays of the Appalachian League where he spent the first of five seasons in the Toronto system. Sikula reached the Class AA level with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2014 and 2015.
