The reigning Can-Am League champions are set to return to Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton (RCGT) Park for their third season in the nation’s capital.
Ottawa Champions single game tickets go on sale tomorrow for all 53 home games in 2017, including a series against the Cuban National Team from June 16-18, a series with a Dominican Republic team from June 27-29, holiday games on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, and Labour Day, and the All-Star festivities taking place July 24-25.
The Cubans will be sending their top players on a month-long tour of the Can-Am League for the second straight year, and the team will include many who played in this year’s World Baseball Classic. This will be the first tour by the Dominican Republic team.
This year’s All-Star game will mark the first time any Ottawa baseball team has hosted an All-Star game. The two-day event will feature a skills competition and home run derby on July 24, followed by the best of the Can-Am League taking on the best of the American Association in the game itself on July 25.
“The All-Star Game is going to be one of the premier events on the Ottawa 2017 calendar this summer,” says Champions general manager Ben Hodge. “The best independent baseball players will converge on Ottawa in July, so we’ll really be able to showcase everything the two leagues have to offer.”
The Champions play their season opener against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles at RCGT Park on May 18. The game will feature the raising of the championship banner, followed by the ring ceremony on May 19. The five-game series concludes with a 1:35 p.m. matinee on Victoria Day Monday.
“There is definitely excitement in the air with the core of the team coming back after winning the Can-Am League championship in 2016,” says Hodge.
