Jason Coker did it in 2016, and now the Ottawa Champions will see if there are any under-the-radar players who can impress the coaching staff in 2017.

The Champions will be holding open tryouts on May 5 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Prospective players can fill out the form at the following link – http://goo.gl/forms/JIt7HBxhLe – to register for the open tryouts.

Manager Hal Lanier, new pitching coach Miguel Gomez, and coaches Jared Lemieux, Sébastien Boucher, and Stéphane Pétronzio will be on hand to evaluate players’ skill levels in every aspect of the game. Lanier says he’s hoping to see more potential players come out for this year’s camp. Deadline for applications is April 28.

“There will be jobs available and you never know what players will show up to a tryout camp,” he says. “There is good talent in Ottawa and the surrounding area, so I’d like to see more attendance this year.”

Coker, a former Ottawa Fat Cats infielder, made the team out of open tryouts in 2016, and hit .239 with seven RBI in 24 games, while also appearing in six games as a pitcher, finishing with a 1-1 record.

Ottawa opens the 2017 season on May 18 at RCGT Park against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. Season tickets and flex packs are on sale. View the schedule and purchase your tickets now at www.ottawachampions.com.
