The Ottawa Champions have re-signed LHP Yean Carlos Gil to a contract for the 2017 season.

Gil, 26, had an 8-6 record with a 3.46 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 111.2 innings pitched in the 2016 regular season then went 1-0 with a 5.68 ERA in the playoffs.

“He did a great job this year and actually got better as the year went on,” said Champions manager Hal Lanier. “He was one of our top starters so it’s good to have him back.”

The lefthander from Maracay, Venezuela, was twice named Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week during the 2016 season. Gil was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves in 2010, and pitched as high as High-A Carolina in the Carolina League.

He joins RHP Daniel Cordero, 2B Albert Cartwright, and 1B Kenny Bryant as players to re-sign with Ottawa following the Champions win in the Can-Am League championship in September.

Season tickets and flex packs for the 2017 Ottawa Champions season are on sale. Tickets for the 2017 Can-Am League/American Association All-Star Game scheduled for July 25 in Ottawa are also on sale.
